Yoga as therapy is the process of empowering the individual through yoga with a deep awareness and integrated understanding of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual body. Yoga techniques and practices are adapted to the client’s specific needs in order to restore balance and promote optimal health and wellness.

This program is designed to help students gain an in-depth understanding of the core therapeutic yoga principals. Students will develop and refine the unique qualities and skills necessary to use yoga as therapy with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression and trauma. Throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to experience therapeutic yoga practices and apply their knowledge through teaching, assignments and small group work.

Who is this program is for:

  • Yoga teachers eager to understand how yoga can be applied therapeutically to promote emotional health and to refine the unique skills needed to become a yoga therapist.
  • Clinicians and health professionals wanting to learn an integrated approach to promote optimal emotional health and how to tailor therapeutic yoga practices for clients suffering with depression, anxiety and trauma.

This training consists of three module weekends and a mentorship program.

Module Weekends:

  • Fridays 6pm-9pm, Saturdays 11am-7pm, Sundays 11am-7pm

Module 1 - Yoga for Anxiety and Depression

Jan 27-29, 2017; Fri 6-9pm, Sat 11-7pm & Sun 11-7pm

Learning Objectives

  • Introduction to Yoga Therapy.
  • Learn the basic principles of Yoga Therapy.
  • Review fundamental yoga therapy perspectives and models for understanding and managing emotion.
  • Discover the interaction between the body, breath, mind, and emotions in health and well-being.
  • Understand how anxiety and depression influence the physical, energetic, mental, and emotional body.
  • Learn evidence-based yoga practices to meet and manage anxiety and depression with asana, pranayama, meditation, and yoga nidra.
  • Learn how to create a safe therapeutic yoga sequence to meet your client’s needs.
  • Learn components necessary for creating a therapeutic yoga class.
  • Take away specific evidence-based yoga techniques to manage mood in a clinical or private setting.

Module 2 - Yoga for Trauma

Feb 3-5, 2017; Fri 6p-9p, Sat 11a-7p & Sun 11a-7p

Learning Objectives

  • Introduction to yoga therapy.
  • Learn the basic principles for trauma informed yoga therapy.
  • Discover the interaction between the body, breath, mind, intellect, and emotions in health and well-being.
  • Review fundamental yoga therapy perspectives and models for managing dysregulation and trauma in the body.
  • Understand how trauma influences the physical, energetic, mental and emotional body.
  • Learn trauma informed evidence-based yoga practices including specific asana, pranayama and meditation.
  • Learn modified practices such as chair yoga to accommodate diverse settings and support clients with a wide range of abilities.
  • Understand the elements necessary to create a safe space for trauma survivors
  • Learn how to help your clients create a safe space for themselves within their practice.
  • Take away specific trauma informed yoga techniques for the clinical, group or private setting.
  • Learn components necessary for creating a therapeutic trauma informed yoga class.

Module 3 - The Art of Yoga Therapy

  • Understanding the teacher/client relationship: how to build a therapeutic relationship.
  • The importance of communication skills and therapeutic language.
  • Review ethical principals and scope of practice in a therapeutic yoga practice.
  • Refine observational skills and learn how to assess postural patterning.
  • Explore and understand how to help your clients cultivate balance the subtle body
  • The importance of self care as a Yoga Therapist.

Yoga Therapy Mentorship Program

Mar 25th, Apr 8th, Apr 22nd & May 6th; Saturdays 12:30-6:30pm
Cost for just Module 3 & Mentorship: $905 (* Module 1 & 2 pre-requisite)

Learning Objective

  • Refine the application of your therapeutic yoga teaching skills through case studies and on-going supervision.
  • Understand and implement intake and assessment/evaluation tools necessary to develop appropriate session strategies and practices.
  • Develop specific therapeutic yoga practices and interventions based on client individual needs.
  • Recognize and manage the subtle dynamic inherent client/therapist relationship.
  • Understand professional issues and requirements such as documentation, ethics, business practices and legal aspects of practice.
  • Define your path as a yoga therapist.
  • Deepen your commitment to your personal practice and see how your personal practice supports your clients.

Prerequisites

Students must be enrolled in or have completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training program or be a master’s level mental (or higher) clinician or health professional with a regular yoga practice for at least two years.

Full Program Registration: $1,695; $500 deposit required. Payment plans available.
